Petition for Traffic Calming Measures on Old Lancaster Road

PETITION FOR TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURESOld Lancaster Rd Between Concord Rd & Hudson RdMay 3, 2010 We, the undersigned residents of the Town of Sudbury residing on or in the vicinity of the portion of Old Lancaster Road lying westerly of Concord Road, respectfully request that the Board of Selectmen and Town Manager take the actions set forth below. WHEREAS, the portion of Old Lancaster Road lying to west of Concord Road (“OLR-West”) is a public way and a scenic road which is narrow and winding in places; and WHEREAS, there have been more than forty-five motor vehicle accidents along OLR-West within the past ten years; and WHEREAS, most of the motor vehicle accidents along OLR-West within the past ten years were the result of excessive speed; WHEREAS, the traffic conditions along OLR-West are a public safety hazard to the undersigned and other persons who travel along OLR-West on foot, in motor vehicles and other means of transportation; and WHEREAS, the Board of Selectmen is empowered by Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40, Section 22 to make rules and orders for the regulation of motor vehicles on public ways in the Town of Sudbury; and WHEREAS, the Town Departments which are responsible for the maintenance of public ways and for ensuring the safety of travelers along such ways, the Department of Public Works and the Police Department, respectively, are under jurisdiction of the Board of Selectmen and the Town Manager. NOW, THEREFORE, the undersigned hereby respectfully request that the Board of Selectmen or Town Manager, as appropriate, take the following actions in order to ensure the safety of all persons who travel along OLR-West on foot, in motor vehicles and other means of transportation: 1. Direct the Director of the Department of Public Works, the Town Engineer, the Fire Chief and the Police Department Safety Officer to meet with a group of not more than five OLR-West residents within the next 30 days for the purpose of formulating a recommendation as to a.) the placement of speed tables in OLR-West including, but not limited to the type, number, location and period(s) of placement of such speed tables in OLR-West; and b.) other traffic calming measures. 2. Adopt an order or rule requiring the placement and maintenance of speed tables in OLR-West and, if advisable, other traffic calming measures at the Town’s expense in accordance with the recommendation made by said Town officials and employees and OLR-West residents. FURTHER, it is the consensus of the undersigned that no trees within OLR-West should be removed, unless the tree is dead and it poses an imminent threat to public safety by falling.
